Morning Musings… 10

It is not that I didnt have any thoughts or didnt get time during these days but refrained from writing what was going on in my mind. It might be a trifle for you all as it was more with me and myself. Someday will share the same too.

Well today began on a different note. It is related to Mathematics. Last few years I have seen that the subject most kids dread the most is Mathematics. You talk to them and the way they react is surprising for me atleast!

And to some extent I know that people from my fraternity try to frighten the kids saying that it is the most difficult subject particularly at the college level. Whatever reason they must be having but to imbibe a fear about their own subject is shameful. Then what are we there for? Rather our presence should make the subject easy and enjoyable. At the same time I know many teachers who try to do it so simple that kids love to learn the subject and become masters later.

Also I feel that Basic Mathematics begins at home. Our parents used to get us to learn the tables and repeat them every evening lest we loose touch. My grandpa and many of his age used to recite the tables of 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75 and 2.25. We learned from them.

I should point out that there is a difference between learning and rotte learning. Learning is for life and rotte leaning is for exams. After exams it’s ok if you forget. That’s a different topic which I will write on someday later.

Let’s come back to Mathematics and let us resolve to make it easy for the kids and for ourselves.
